Ioxus UltraCapacitor UC-31 is a Smart Power ultracapacitor based product for vehicles that improves starting reliability, improves vehicle voltage health, improves battery life, and improves sustainability. With a 15-year design life, you will never change your ultracapacitor again.

Reducing lead acid battery count in most cases, and reducing maintenance costs associated with low voltage conditions, the ultracapacitor will ensure that your vehicle is ready to start, always. Eliminating thousands of pounds of lead and sulfuric acid from needing to be mined, refined, shipped, and recycled, the ultracapacitor is a major sustainability enhancement for your fleet.

Improved voltage conditions lead to longer lasting starters, relays, engine control modules, and greatly improved down-time due to prematurely aged components, creating a higher reliability of starting when you need to, every time.

Using our Smart Power power electronics, the unit supplies nearly all of the cranking current during engine starts. For short stops, such as during a delivery, the ultracapacitor provides the energy to the electrical bus to support ancillary devices until a crank is initiated.  The ultracapacitor stores a relatively small amount of energy compared with a battery, but it delivers engine cranking current. The Ioxus UltraCapacitor will turn on automatically when it sees alternator voltage for the first time.The unit will also turn itself off (go into maintenance mode) once one of the terminals are disconnected, after approximately 5 seconds. The Bluetooth app can also be used to turn the unit on (“Run” mode), off (“Maintenance” mode), or a jump start can be initiated using the app without connecting any additional wires.

The jump start mode will initiate a charge sequence, collecting energy from the battery. Once the ultracapacitor is charged, it will assist the low batteries to provide the power the crank the engine.

The 12V Ioxus UltraCapacitor UC31 is designed to work with at least one 12V battery connected in parallel, and the unit needs at least 6V to be able to turn on. Often, when installing the UltraCapacitor, one or more batteries can be removed.

Damaged, confusing, and fantastic.

Box arrived in good condition.
Ultracapacitor was advertised as B stock, but it appears it has been used for years and stored in the sun because there was mud crusted in the terminals and the fiberglass housing is faded and shows the characteristic haze of UV exposure. One of the terminals was bent ~10* and has damage from what looks like not pre-charging (Melted top of terminal). If i had paid $200+ i’d have been returning it.

It also is confusing, no manual. Connecting a battery charger to it, the yellow ‘Maint’ light comes on. No current gets drawn from the charger. Installed the “Ultra-Cap” app and connected to the ultracap. had to take it out of maintenance mode (passcode 1234) before it would do anything. Then it would accept a charge and slowly built up to 13v.
Once you disconnect the charger, the app and a multimeter both ahow the voltage falls from 13.4 down to 10v in less than 5 seconds witch is a bit concerning. This appears to be a protection mechanism so it doesn’t drain the battery or the cap.
I was worried it was cooked and useless. (Even the old cheap 1F capacitors with volt meters would last longer discharging into the volt meter)
Once wired to the car battery however, and in “Run” mode things are dramatically different.
I was tinkering with my setup with the engine off for over an hour until my main battery fell down to 10.5 volts and the radio lights would turn off from the voltage drop.
For shits and giggles, i hit the starter and she cranked and started… to my amazement. A single 2 year old cheapo walmart group 32 discharged to 10.5V cold starting with the assist of this UltraCap?! Heck yea!
Voltage drop has been reduced, we used to drop down to 12.6v and have light dimming, but now its rare to drop below 12.9v (I have a 240A high output alternator) pushing 4k rms.

Having eyeballed these Ultracaps since they first released, now is a good time to buy. $600 MSRP was nuts, get Lithium. But for $100 they beat the pants off anything else you can buy, battery or capacitor.
