Why Wire Gauge Matters
Electrical wire is rated by AWG (American Wire Gauge). In AWG, a lower number means a thicker wire. Thicker wire carries more current (amperage) with less resistance, meaning more of your amplifier’s power reaches the speakers instead of being lost as heat. Thin wire in a high-power system is the number one cause of amp shutdowns, fuse blows, and in severe cases, electrical fires.
How to Calculate What You Need
Use this simple rule of thumb: divide your amp’s total RMS output by 10 to get a conservative amperage estimate, then size your wire accordingly.
Example
- Monoblock amp: 1,000W RMS → roughly 70–100 amps of draw
- Required wire gauge: 1/0 AWG (zero gauge) power and ground

Note: Always size up if runs are longer than 15 feet or if you plan to add more equipment later.
What’s Included in a Typical Wiring Kit
- Power wire — Runs from the battery positive terminal to the amp’s power input.
- Ground wire — Short run from the amp to a solid metal chassis ground point. Same gauge as power wire.
- Inline fuse holder and fuse — Located within 18 inches of the battery to protect against shorts.
- RCA cables — Carries the audio signal from the head unit to the amp’s inputs.
- Remote turn-on wire — Thin wire that signals the amp to power on when the head unit turns on.
- Speaker wire — Connects amp outputs to speakers or subs.
- Split loom or wire wrap — Protects the wiring runs from chafing and heat.
Red Flags in Cheap Wiring Kits
- Copper-clad aluminum (CCA) wire labeled as OFC — CCA has significantly higher resistance and gets hotter under load.
- Thin insulation that cracks when bent — a fire and short-circuit risk.
- Undersized fuse holders — must be rated for at least the same amperage as the fuse.
- No fuse near the battery — any kit that omits the inline fuse entirely is unsafe.

The “Big 3” Upgrade
If your system pulls serious power (1,000W RMS or more), consider the “Big 3” upgrade. This involves replacing three factory wires with heavier gauge equivalents: alternator positive to battery positive, battery negative to chassis ground, and engine block to chassis ground. Fuse Sizing
The inline fuse near the battery protects the power wire — not the amplifier. Size your fuse to match the wire’s current capacity. When in doubt, match the fuse to the wire gauge rating in the chart above.
